Is the expression awkward or not?

If we have to test a material (for example: to test it whether the material is suitable for building a house), can we call it as "the material in test"? Do you feel the expression -"material in test" to be awkward or not?

Depending on the context, you could say the material in the test, the material tested, etc. Could you give us a sample sentence?

I'd say "the test material". But if you're writing about this, you should name the material at the start, and use that name - even if it's an experimental name, like MX302-5.

"Material under test" or "material being tested" seems good to me.
