    Grammar

The following sentence is from the LA Times today.

The suspect's gun as well as property belonging to the students was recovered, Neiman said.

Why was recovered? There are two subjects. Please explain.

    Thanks,
    Brian

Either "was" or "were" would work for me.

    Re: Grammar

    I'd go for:

The suspect's gun, as well as property belonging to the students, was recovered, Neiman said.
The suspect's gun(,) and property belonging to the students(,) were recovered, Neiman said.
