    They pulled back

Taking Ragna's arm, he paused and put his mouth to her ear. With a wide smile she cocked her head slightly to one side so as to hear him better. They pulled back, laughing at some joke, and came towards the hotel doors.

Have I understood it correctly that they 'moved their bodies backwards, away from each other'?

    Thanks.

I would say 'yes'! They separated from each other as they approached the hotel doors where, presumably, they would find an opportunity to resume their physical closeness.

Yes - they drew apart after the whispered conversation.
