    Default meaning of up

Woman:Now, what sort of dress did you have in mind, dear?

Lily:Nothing too huge or-or poofy. I'm not really a girlie girl. But I would like to look like a beautiful princess.

    Robin:
I saw a couple up front that were nice.

Hi, I can't understand the meaning of "up" here. What does that mean? If I just say "I saw a couple front that were nice", would it be wrong expression?

    Thanks in advance.

We sometimes use "up the front" or "up front" instead of "at the front". In the piece you posted, I think the dresses Robin saw that he/she thought were nice were at the front of the shop, near the door/window.

"I saw a couple front ..." is incorrect.

"Up front" would be the normal expression here. Meaning in the front of the store.
