    Because I am/was injured...

    Because I am/was injured, I can't go on a picnic.

    I believe only 'am' is correct? Am I right?

    Either could be correct. "Am", at the present time. "Was", in the past and possibly recovering now. or fully recovered, but don't want to risk injury again or several other possibilities.
