Appointment book is like a calendar, except you don't hang it on the wall and it usually doesn't come with any pictures. It's like a planner that goes week by week, month by month and each day is broken up into hours so when you have clients and want to book them for an appointment, you write their names in the appropriate line corresponding with the time you will be seeing them. I use my calendar to write in my own appointments ( dentist, doctor, etc).
Appointment books ( or planners as we oftentimes call them) come in all diffrent shapes and sizes...from large to pocket size).
I think diary is just a personal account of what you are doing every day.

Mary: Thank you for mentioning "planner". This is the word that I use to describe the small black binder I use to record my appointments and memos.
