    Default 'd=would or/and had?

    Hi everybody,

I think that 'd can be an abbreviation for either had or would, is this correct?

    A few examples:

He just isnt the kind of guy Id (1) want to call up. Id (2) rather call old Thomas Hardy up.

He was exactly the kind of guy that wouldnt get out of your light when you asked him to. Hed (3) do it, finally, but it took him a lot longer if you asked him to.

Say he had a tie on that you liked a helluvalot, you know what he would do? Hed (4) probably take it off and give it to you. He really would. Or you know what hed (5) do? Hed (6) leave it on your bed or something.

If someone have the time to tell me where it should be had or would in the above sentences Id really appreciate it!

Had rather (also, had sooner) = would prefer. For example, I had rather you let me do the driving, or He'd sooner switch than fight. This idiom today is often replaced by would rather.

Which would you put in the 6 blanks, Swede, had or would?

    I would guess:

    1, would
    2, would
    3, would
    4, would
    5, would
    6, would

But I'm not sure. Please tell me if I'm correct or incorrect about this...

Yes, I would use would in all of the blanks too, Swede. The only blank that shows preference and could therefore also take had is #2.
