Default bottles propped against the railings.

What kind of situation is "bottles propped against the railings"? Are the bottles stacked against the railings?

ex)One volunteer from Seattle who worked in a Rumanian orphanage was shocked when she first arrived to find the babies tightly swathed in blankets and lying in cribs with bottles propped against the railings. "They had very little human contact" Elaine recalls, and "because all the windows were closed to prevent ear infections, there was an overpowering stench. None of these babies smiled. All of their faces were expressionless" she remembers sadly...

I imagine each crib had one bottle in it, and the bottle was lying against the railing (side of the crib) in a way that it kept the bottle in a position where the baby might be able to reach it.

Thanks a lot! This might be a stupid question, but what was the usage of such bottle? Just to protect babies from hitting the railings or to provide water in it to babies?

If they're babies small enough to be swaddled, the bottles would be milk or formula, I hope.
