Default Present simple and Past simple

    Hello.
I found the following sentence in the book "Effective Academic Writing 3":
"The director of the project, David Acevedo, agrees and said he was drawn to directing the project because he wanted to see how answers would change depending on people's social, economic, and racial background."
I'd like to ask whether this sentence is gramatically correct because I think it should be 'agreed and said'.
    Thanks in advance.
PS: Please let me know if there are any errors in my post.

It's acceptable, though I think it would be better stylistically to use the same tense for both verbs, or to use a stronger punctuation mark than a comma.

What does 'to use a stronger punctuation mark than a comma' mean?
