    Hi,I do not know the meaning of "take off"in this sentence.could you help me?

    The field of biotechnology has taken off and is spawning innovation not only in medical applications but also in waste cleanup.

    When something takes off, it becomes accepted, well-known or sccessful. Here, I presume it means that it has grown into a serious area of science.
