    there were

    Are these sentences correct:
    1-In those days outside the city were farms.
    2-In those days outside the city there were farms.

    3-In those days in the city were good hotels.
    4-In those days in the city there were good hotels.

    5-In the box were beautiful marbles.
    6-In the box there were beautiful marbles.

    WAS/WERE are used to refer to the location of some object, the word WHERE matters here. THERE WAS/ THERE WERE are used to show that something existed, where it was is not so important as the fact that it did exist.
    So 2, 4, 6 are correct.

    Whilst perfectly understandable, I see no reason not to use the simple:

    - In those days, there were farms outside the city.
    - In those days, there were good hotels in the city.
    - There were beautiful marbles in the box.
    Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

    I would restate as above. When (if applicable) What, Where (if applicable).

    Good news for our students - they sometimes have problems with using there is (there was) / there are (there were), so I'll have to think of a way to explain it to them that they can do without these structures, just using was / were instead (which they normally do).
