    No Sooner......than help?

    Hi,

I'm new to this forum but this forum has been quite helpful to me few times.

I'm full with doubts about no sooner.....than

    According to my teacher's note:

    Usage

    Past - did
    Present - Singular - does
    Plural - do

Everywhere on the web, it is given had and present tense could not be used with it. It will be very kind if someone shed's some light on it or better help me by giving correct answers to this questions:

    1. As soon as, we heard the blast, we ran away.
    2. As soon as he watches me he start calling.
    3. As soon as I complete my homework I watch TV.
    4. As soon as the game got over they all ran away.
    5. As soon as he caught he was punished.
    6. As soon as we step outside it started raining.
    7. As soon as you fail they beat.

Also, Do we have to use comma in answer?

    Welcome to Using English.

Are sentences 1-7 your own writing? If not, are you sure you copied them exactly as they were given?
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

I'm afraid most of them are poor English.

    2. As soon as he watches me he start calling. "Watches" is the wrong verb
    3. As soon as I complete my homework I watch TV.
    4. As soon as the game got over they all ran away.I would not use "got over"
    5. As soon as he caught he was punished.was caught
    6. As soon as we step outside it started raining.stepped
    7. As soon as you fail they beat. I don't even know what this was supposed to say.

Also, Do we have to use comma in answer?
I am not a "sir" as my picture might tell you.

I will do one for you so can see the pattern. You try the rest.
No sooner had we stepped outside than it started to rain.

I apologize I did overlooked that you are a female.

    1. No sooner had we heard the blast than we ran away.
    2. No sooner had he watched me than he started calling.
    3. No sooner had I completed my homework than I watch TV.
    4. No sooner had the game get over than they all ran away.
    5. No sooner had he was caught than he was punished.
    6. No sooner had you fail than they beat.

    Are the above sentences right?

The last sentence means as soon as you fail in something they come to beat you.

No, I am not Indian, but I lived and worked in India (Rajasthan) for a number of years. My younger colleagues called me Bhaisahab.

    5. No sooner had he been caught than he was punished.
    6. No sooner do you fail than they beat you.

I have made some tense corrections to keep them consistent. However, with the exception of #1, they are not natural English.

Thank you for all the help you have provided to me. I am well aware that these sentences are not of natural English but Indian Education System is the main culprit about it. I think the thread have fulfill all it's purposes, it's the time to close it. The thread may rest in peace forever. Thank you using english forum.

One more thing, I have some composition to get it checked. Where should I post it?
