    Which of the following sentences is acceptable, or which is the best?

    1. On July 15, 1998, in the USA, there were three classmates that encounter a UFO.
    2. On July 15, 1998, in the USA, there were three classmates encountering a UFO.
    3. On July 15, 1988, in the USA, three classmates encountered a UFO.

    1 could be corrected by changing "encounter" to "encountered."
    3 is the best choice.
    I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

    Third one i.e On July 15, 1988, in the USA, three classmates encountered a UFO. is most appropriate.

    #3 is the only natural and grammatically correct one.
