    Question 'that' vs. 'so that'

Are both those marked phrases correct?

    1) "The stratification aims at subdividing a population in such a way so that a given objective function is minimal."
    AND
    2) "The stratification aims at subdividing a population in such a way that a given objective function is minimal."

    Thanks
