Back with 'hatch' (remember that?), I've just noticed that my 'ambivalent' should have been 'polyvalent'. These three all refer to the same event:
The hen hatched the egg
The egg hatched
The chick hatched
I'm not sure about 'Thehen hatched the chick.' It doesn't feel right, although in the figurative sense the object can be the result: 'They hatched a plot'.
