    Default inflate away

All this suggests that colleges have good cause to worry about their debts. Unlike grades, they cannot be inflated away.

    What does "inflated away" mean?

    Thanks!

We talk about grade inflation- the process by which exams and assessments are made easier in order to make it appear that results are getting better. However, colleges don't control inflation, so they cannot reduce their debts in that way.

The word for that is 'quantitative easing', aka 'printing money'.
