Default The subway is an assault on your senses.

The subway is an assault on your senses.

Will it be OK if I understand 'assault' as 'attack' and 'on your senses' as 'in a sense'?

Yes, an assault is an attack.

No, "on your senses" is not "in a sense."

You enter the subway and your eyes, your ears, your nose are all assaulted by the conditions. It's not an assault in some way of thinking about it ("in a sense") it is an assault on your senses.

    NOT A TEACHER

As you can see, 'assault' is a synonym to 'attack'. assault - synonyms or related words for assault - Macmillan Dictionary and Thesaurus

As for the part 'on your senses', I am afraid that the meaning is different. sense noun (MEANING) - definition in British English Dictionary & Thesaurus - Cambridge Dictionary Online

In my opinion the sentece says that your senses (sight, hearing etc.) are 'attacked' (i.e. there are lots of things to perceive in the subway).
