Who: subject and object questions

3. Who did Mary go to London with last week?
4. Mary went to London with May and Ann last week.

In sentence 1 and 3, which is correct? Thanks.

Both are correct. They are different ways of expressing the same idea. Numbers 2 and 4 are not questions, they are answers. Do not put a question mark (?) after an answer.

You probably already know this, but if you have a teacher who insists on "book English," then I believe that No. 3

should read:


Whom did Mary go to London with last week? (That is: Mary did go to London last week with [preposition] whom?)

Or even "better":

With whom did Mary go to London last week?
