Default The base of a crucifix

One more question on the articles. In this sentence "HE throws himself to the base of a big crucifix" (the crucifix is mentioned for the first time), should I say "a base of a crucifix" or "the base of a crucifix" or "base of a crucifix". In Russian we do not have any articles, so for me it is quite a problem to understand

I would say "to the foot of the crucifix"

We're more interested in WHERE - the position - and "the foot" reads better here.

"The base" would be more suitable in a technical context - e.g. "The base of the crucifix is made of oak" etc
