    Default The new layout

I see there has been another little re-design of the forum, moving the sidebar over to the left and adding a long line of social network sharing buttons. When you add that to the space taken up on the right-hand side with the collection of smilies (unnecessary in my opinion), it has made the actual usable forum column even narrower. The box we type in is getting smaller and smaller widthways every time there is an overhaul. I would say that it now takes up only approximately 50% of the total width of my laptop screen. That seems like an awful lot of wasted space.

Just as a personal comment, I much preferred the sidebar when it was over to the right. It seemed much less intrusive and yet easier to use.

Thanks for all your hard work on the site though.

In this new layout, in my computer at least, the icons showing threads with new posts appear way to the left, so it's sort of hard to match them to the actual forums.

I also like the sidebar better on the right, but that's just a matter of personal taste. I guess in a couple days I'll be used to the new position and will no longer find it as intrusive as I do now.

Thanks for your effort to improve the site!

Kudos to Red5 and Tdol for all your hard work maintaining and improving UsingEnglish.

However, I do have one criticism. Every time I click on the arrow, the sidebar disappears. But when I leave the current page, it comes back. So apparently, there is no way for users do disable it permanently. Could you perhaps allow users to disable it if they wish to do so? That would really be great!

Let's see what Red5 can do to sort it out. It wasn't collapsing a few hours ago, so it is being worked on.

    That's good news!

I should have mentioned that yesterday, I was able to disable it permanently, but now it just keeps coming back .

I widened the site a bit to give the text more space, but can't do much about the fact that the sidebar keeps popping back at this time. I'll keep trying though...

If you collapse the items in the sidebar, they stay collapsed, but the width doesn't stay shrunk. It doesn't do anything to help with space, but it does remove the text and links for people who prefer less clutter.

Thank you so much for widening the site. It's much better (in my opinion!) I also hadn't noticed that you could collapse the sidebar contents.

The clickable smilies are no more.

    Thanks for the input.
