    discover vs demonstrate

I could easily perceive that his heart burnt to relieve his starving kids, but he seemed ashamed to ______ his inability to me.

    A. discover B. recover C. demonstrate D. impress

I think it's C. But the key is A. Why??

I don't like any of the choices. C is the best, but why someone would consider demonstrating an inability is a question. The answer should be something like "admit". A is not even close to being a proper answer.

I agree. I think "demonstrate" here means "show". But I found in dictionary that there is no "discover sth to sb". Also "discover" can also be "reveal". And there's "reveal sth to sb" in the dictionary. So it's kind of weird.

Whoever wrote the sentence was not all that familiar with English. What does it mean to "relieve his starving kids"? At the very minimum it should have been written, "to relieve his starving children".

I found who wrote this sentence. It turns out the author was an Anglo-Irish in 1700s. I think that such usage is already obsolete. And something like "demonstrate" or "show" would make more sense.
