Default when you had finished / after finishing

Can sentences 1) and 2) below be used interchangeably, or are there differences in meaning and/or use?
    1) You were allowed to leave the table when you had finished your dinner.
    2) You were allowed to leave the table after finishing your dinner.

    Thank you in advance.

    p.s.
Sentence 1) is from the thread titled "May / Can", originally posted on 06-Oct-2012.
Should I have submitted this post to that thread, or is it all right that I started a new thread?
