    Default years many

I found the following sentence in a grammar book.

Over the past fifty years many urban trees have been lost through disease, drought, development and neglect.

Do you agree a comma should be added in between years and many?

    Thank you.

It's not essential, in my opinion.

And I would put it there without question.
    So... your choice.

I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
