    to his right

    1. I can't get what "looking in at Brian at the shelter and the fire" means. Did the skunk see Brian or "the shelter and the fire"?
    2. What does "to his right" mean? What is the difference between "reached his right" and "reached to his right"?

ex)The skunk wasn't four feet away, looking in at Brian at the shelter and the fire, and as he watched, it whipped up its rear end and tipped its taile over and aimed directly at his face. I'm dead, he thought. For a long time they stayed that way. Brian holding his breath waiting to be sprayed, and the skunk aiming at him. But the skunk didn't spray. Just aimed and held it. He's hungry, Brian thought. That's all. He's hunting and he's hungry. Slowly Brian reached to his right, where the meat was stored back in the corner...

    Re: to his right

The skunk saw Brian AND the shelter and the fire. That's why it says "Brian at the shelter AND the fire"

"to his right" means to the right of Brian (not to his left).

He saw Brian and he saw the fire. Brian was at the shelter at the time.

Why wasn't it written like this? "looking in at Brian and at the shelter and the fire"

It would have been better if it had been.
