    Default Apostrophe S

I have read, the apostrophe "s" used only with living creatures but I found the following:
    1/today's lesson.
    2/cars' doors.

Is there any exception, what is it?

Can I have a brief on this subject?

Many natives are not aware of this rule and have no trouble saying things like that. I don't. There's a problem with my car's engine. I love this movie's cinematography.

In case you miss the irony of Dave's comment, if native speakers are not "aware" of a "rule" and commonly say and write things that violate the "rule" and find violations of that "rule" completely natural and correct, it's not really a rule at all.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
