    ... lot of ...

It is a beautiful experience in many ways. But, it is an awful lot of time to spend with yourself, without words and without the distraction of phone, television or computer. The silence and space brings perspective and with that I realise how much pain from the past paints the picture of my present.

A common mistake is to use lot of. For example, "There are lot of accidents on this road". To avoid making this mistake, remember either to use a before lot, or to make lot plural lots.

As a result, lot of doesn't exist. I think this is a trick.

The piece fits the rule perfectly. It's not just "a lot of time to spend with yourself" it is "an awful lot of time to spend with yourself". The word "awful" has been added for emphasis and, because it starts with a vowel sound, the indefinite article becomes "an" instead of the usual "a".
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
