    Present Perfect versus Past Simple

Here are two situations in the classroom:

    1) a student made a mistake in his paper that he had turned in three days ago and the teacher is talking about it in class
    2) a student has just made a mistake in class

How shall I phrase the following idea in both situations so that the sentences would be grammatically correct:

I am glad you made (have made) a mistake - you gave (have given) me a chance to teach you!

"I am glad you have made a mistake - you have given me a chance to teach you!"
    This works in both contexts.
