Isn't 1 possible? Is only 3 possible instead of 1? If you are talking about a specific party among some parties, wouldn't 1 be also possible?

I have thought about the reason why a needs "a" while b needs "the", and it's like in a, "a party" is an object among so many possible parties, and it's not limited, but in b, "the city" and "the man" are equal to their subjects, being limited. If you think my intepretation is wrong, would you be kind to tell me?

With the example about the party, the listener would need to know what party you were talking about before you mention it using the definite article.

- I hear John made some new friends.
- Yes, I heard that too.
- Do you know where he found them?
- At a party.
- Really?
- Yes. I didn't know he was invited to parties!
- He is. So am I. In fact, I went to the party where he met those new friends.
- Ah, I think my cousin went to the party too. Was there a live band there?
- Yes, that's the one. It was a really good party.

We establish early on that there was a party where John found some new friends, so later in the conversation that party can be referred to as "the party".
