    Hello,

    -You could have studied Engish rather than play/playing/played basketball before the exam.

    I think that in this sentence, the correct answer is both 'playing and played', am I right?

    No. It's "play" and "playing". "Playing" would more normally be used.
    I'm not a teacher of English, but I have spoken it for (almost) all of my life....
