It is not a matter of which is better, it is a matter of how you use the terms. As has been said many times, much depends on context.

Ok, the situation is the following. One man has lost his friend during the war. He is in grief. His other friend gives him a look of comfort to make him cheer up.

Ok, the situation is the following. One man has lost his friend during the war. He is in grief. His other friend gives him a look of comfort to make him cheer up.

I would opt to use "comforting look" in your sentence. I don't believe that this look would make a person cheer up. It may make the person feel better, or safer, but not necessarily cheerier.
