    Is the article necessary?

___Parentsí elder child was educated abroad. Now they are discussing whether to send their younger one to study there, too.

This is a topic for a dialogue which my students practice in class. Is there a need to use an article before "parent's elder child"?
If I were a native speaker of English, I would never shut up. :-)
