Question about strange use of comma

I have a friend who always puts a comma in the following type of sentence:

    How are you doing, today?

That comma seems awkward and unncecessary to me, but he insists it's correct. Who's right?

    thanks!

Re: Question about strange use of comma

There is no need for a comma. You are right.
