Default “Poverty is your miserable lot and don’t even question it.”

The people are being told, “Poverty is your miserable lot and don’t even question it.”
Does this mean that poverty is your fate and you reap what you sow as a result stop blaming others for your misery, so be it?

    Thank you,

No. There is no sense that people deserve their lot.

Thank you, SoothingDave. Does this mean that you have to utter the word mea culpa? Or you have no right to say, why do I live in misery? You must live your miserable life as it is. Please, excuse my bad English.

It kind of depends on who is saying it. If it is being said by one's king, or dictator or feudal lord, then it is a person in authority telling you your place and is a threatening statement.
