Hi teachers,
This is for a listening comprehension exercise. The text is from a CD.
Alex Dinon escaped from prison yesterday.

If this is what the students will hear:
What are you doing in my field, young man?’ she said. Alex sat up quickly. ‘I’m sorry,’ he said. ‘I was tired, and needed some sleep. I’m going now.’‘You’re very dirty,’ the old woman said. ‘Look at you! Where are you going?’‘North,’ Alex said. He stood up and began to move away.

Would the following be suitable questions and answers?
1. How did Alex rise from the field? He did it quickly.
2. Did Alex apologize to the old woman? Yes he did
3. What were Alex’s motives to be in her field? (They were that) he was tired and needed some sleep.
4. What did Alex look like? He was very dirty.
5. Which direction did Alex want to go? He wanted to go North.
6. Did Alex rise and began to leave the field? Yes, he did.

Thanks in advance.

It looks like you are planning this exercise for detailed comprehension. I would first try to work out some more general questions or a multiple choice test for general comprehension. As to the questions, they are more or less fine to me, except the first one. Alex didn't rise from the field, he sat up which means he was still on the ground, not lying now as it was before the woman came up to him, but sitting.

Hi englishhobby,
Thank you for your reply.
The exercise is planned for intermediate students, so they don't really need to work out any general questions. They have been doing this kind of exercise in the beginners level with much more easy questions.

Alex didn't rise from the field, he sat up which means he was still on the ground, not lying now as it was before the woman came up to him, but sitting.
Sorry, but if I'm not mistaken, don't you also raise when you go from a lying position to a sitting position?

No–englishhobby is right–you sit up.

"To rise from the field" suggests that he was capable of levitation!

Perhaps you should ask them "How did he move from his original/lying position in the field?"

Hi Rover,
Thank you for your reply. I wrote 'rise' the way I pronounce it. My mistake.

How about the questions? Are the rest correct?

If you are pronouncing it "raise", then you are pronouncing it incorrectly. "Rise" should rhyme with "eyes".

"To rise from the field" suggests that he was capable of levitation! Oops! That's not the case at all!

Perhaps you should ask them "How did he move from his original/lying position in the field?"

Hi emsr2d2,
Thank you for your reply.
So, instead of:
How did Alex rise from the field? He did it quickly
I should ask:
How did he move from his lying position in the field? He did it quickly.

3. What were Alex’s reasons for being in her field?

6. Did Alex rise and begin to leave the field?

On second though, I pronounce it right then. I wrote my question when I was in a hurry.

How did he move from his lying position and what position did he end up in?
He rose quickly from his lying position and he ended up sitting up.

That might be a bit challenging for intermediates but you don't want to make it too easy.

Why not think of some other questions, without mentioning all the various positions he took? Or try tag questions? For example:
1. The woman didn't notice Alex, did she? - She did. She saw him lying in the field.
2. The woman asked him about his health, didn't she? - No, she didn't. She asked him what he was doing in the field.
3. How did Alex explain why he was in the field (the reason for being in the field)?
4. Alex looked very neat and clean, didn't he? - No, he didn't. He was (looked) dirty.
5. Which direction did he want to go on his way? - He wanted to go North.
6. He was sitting on the ground all through his conversation with the woman (while he was talking to the woman), did he? - Yes, he did.
