1. I did something all day.
2a. I did something for all day.
2b. I had been doing something for all day.

Are the sentences 2a and 2b both right?

When is it necessary to use "for" to show the time interval? And when is it not necessary?

Are the sentences 2a and 2b both right? No, they are both wrong.

When is it necessary to use "for" to show the time interval? And when is it not necessary? When you mention a number, "I lived there for twelve years", for example.
