"She reached for a big knob on the rock face, drew herself in and fumbled for another handhold, found placement for her feet and stood."

According to dictionaries, the noun 'placement' is an activity of putting something in some location. So, is 'to find placement for one's feet' poorly written, because it seems to translate roughly to 'to find the activity of putting one's feet in some location'?

No, it is fine. She found a place to put her feet. You are letting part of the definition (activity) get in the way of your understanding.
