    As a noun, yes.

    a) much = a lot: A lot was said.
    b) much = more than some: Much (of this) was said. ellipsis

    Well, in my English book it says that I can use much in a positive sentence, only that it implies a formal usage. So i chose both of the variants. (by the way, is "variants" correct? )
