Default As grass that is cut down

    I read this sentence:
"Such is life; and we are but as grass that is cut down, and put into the oven and baked."
Does it mean that we are not master of our destiny, like a blade of grass blew by the wind ?
    Thanks for your help.

I don't know anyone who bakes grass, so am unsure about who wrote this.

But yes, if you are like a blade of grass that is mowed down, then you are not in control, that's for sure. You also are one of a million, not anything that stands out.

This sentence is located in "three men in a boat" by Jerome K. Jerome, chapter 6.
