Omission of sentence-ending punctuation with abbreviations

I've noticed that, especially in the UK, sentences don't end in terminal punctuation when sentence-ending abbreviations are used:

    Examples

She bought pens, pencils, paper, etc

Attending the meeting will be John Doe, Jane Doe, et al

Is it correct to omit the sentence-ending punctuation in these?

    Thanks

Re: Omission of sentence-ending punctuation with abbreviations

    No, it isn't.

It's mandatory to end every sentence with a punctuation mark.

Could you cite some examples of this, excluding typos on the web, please?
