Sitting in his large chair with cigarette in hand, he looks rather drawn and quite uncomfortable.
Can I use "a cigarette" instead of "cigarette" in the sentence above?
Could you tell me what is the reason for using "
cigarette" not "a cigarette" in the sentence above?

You can use either.

It's a matter of style, not grammar.
