I wonder if it was supposed to be "stone hard" with some sort of implied meaning of "rock solid"?

I googled the phrase, and had several hits - all questions in various forums about its meaning. Nobody seems to be prepared to quote an original source for it.

Me too. If it was a typo for "hard" there is some irony there.

That's a great suggestion. As someone who has had some unexpected "helpful suggestions" from my phone when I mis-type (too often without my even noticing), I can easily seem someone trying to type "standard" but accidentally hitting the space key so that "stan" becomes "stone" (thanks, Autocorrect!) and "dard" becomes "hard"!
