What's the meaning of this word? - I forgot.

Will it be a grammar mistake to use the verb "to forget" in the Past Simple (in British English) in the context (in the itle)?
If I were a native speaker of English, I would never shut up. :-)

I say and teach "I've forgotten". I consider "I forgot" wrong. You will probably hear it, though.

"I forgot" is not wrong in the right context.

bagzi, this about the normal difference between the past simple and present perfect.

I do not remember the meaning of this word. I have forgotten it.
