[Vocabulary] Can someone be in a bad state?

Hello,

Is the use of "state" correct here, please?

"My cousin is badly depressed. He drinks a lot of alcohol and refuses to work. He is in a terrible state. "

Yes.

He's in a terrible state.
He's in a real state.
He's in a right state.
He's in a bad state.
He's in a really bad state.

All of the above are ways of saying the same thing.

Note that you don't have to use "of alcohol". If you say "He drinks a lot ..." people will know what you mean.
