Is a comma needed after 'honestly'?

John didn't want to go, and quite honestly I didn't either.

John didn't want to go, and quite honestly I didn't either.
You need two commas or none.
"John didn't want to go and, quite honestly, I didn't either." Note that the comma goes after 'and' in this case.

Don't you need a comma before 'and' because this coordinating conjunction separates two independent clauses?

No, that would be too many. You do need commas around an interpolated adverbial phrase like "quite honestly". And when that's necessary you don't put a comma before 'and' as well. Besides, it's not a strict rule about commas between independent clauses: "I ran into the room and I sat down".

No commas would be fine in the sentence that you gave as an example...
