The Eternal Craving for Happiness

Hunger and thirst are the two craving which come from our body. Nature has designed us in a way that our body demands from us to gratify these bodily needs. The craving for these bodily needs is logical as we need food and water for the sustenance of our body.
But what about the craving for happiness? The craving which comes from our mind. Is it necessary to satisfy this psychological need? Is it logical? Answer to both of these questions is yes. Yes, we need happiness for a healthy and peaceful mind. And yes, it is logically, as without it, distress and grief will overtake us. Both bodily and psychological needs are essential for our survival and without them life has no meaning or in worse case there is no life.
In spite of these similarities, there is a very significant difference between craving for bodily needs and craving for happiness. Hunger and thirst are momentous but the desire for happiness is eternal. The appetite for food and water is limited but the appetite for happiness is limitless.
We have an eternal craving for happiness. This is the main reason for the unhappiness for most the times. Life has ups and downs but we don’t fully appreciate this fact. We just always want to be happy. We wait for moment of happiness. We chase for happiness. This waiting and chasing are the times when we feel most unhappy.
We have to accept the dark moments of our life just like we embrace the bright moments of life. It is the darkness of night which gives significance to the brightness of morning. We will never be pleased with the taste of sweetness unless we experience the taste of sourness. So, enjoy each and every moment of happiness but don’t crave for the eternal happiness.
