    designate

Is "as" optional when using the word "designate" as used in the following sentence?

The board designated Jim (as) principal of the school.

    Thanks

    re: designate

As an NES but not a teacher:

It works for me personally, with or without "as", but I would have used the word "appointed" for the actions of the board.
