    But it is also a fact that this man is not willing to surrender its faith, nor had it been earlier.

    What does "nor had it been earlier" mean here?

    Why not is it written like "nor it had been earlier"?

    When a clause begins with a (near-) negative expression, we invert subject and verb:

    Never have I seen such a beautiful sight.
    Rarely has a prime minister made such a blunder.
