Hi,

- Because of (his) feeling ill he didn't go to the party.

- In spite of (his) being disavled, he can swim well.

- She is very fit despite (her) having 5 children.

- Owing to (her) not studying regularly, she couldn't pass the exams.

I would like to ask if I must use the personal pronouns being in the backets in those sentences or not. I am wondering because the two subjects in the sentences are the same.

Thanks.

Hi,

- Because of (his) feeling ill he didn't go to the party.
This is very unnatural, with or without "his". We are far more likely to say "Because he was/felt ill, he didn't go to the party".

- In spite of (his) being disabled, he can swim well.
That's OK with or without "his". It's more common without it.

- She is very fit despite (her) having 5 children.
It's much more common and natural without.

- Owing to (her) not studying regularly, she couldn't pass the exams.
This sentence sounds unnatural. "Because she hadn't studied regularly, she couldn't pass the exams."

I would like to ask if I must use the personal pronouns being in the backets in those sentences or not. I am wondering because the two subjects in the sentences are the same.

Thanks.

See above, in red.

Thanks for the answer. I think I have found what I wanted to ask in though + V.ing - Topic ''the peculiar thing about this type of clause is that the -ing participle need not signal the progressive aspect''.

1- Though accepting multiple points of view, the students were unable to either assess or justify them.
2- Though they (had) accepted multiple points of view, the students were unable to either assess or justify them.

3- This is the place where I want to see before dying.
4- This is the place where I want to see before I die.

If it is correct, why are 'because of (his) feeling ill he didn't go to the party' and 'owing to (her) not studying regularly, she couldn't pass the exams' not natural?

Thanks.

Because of agreeing with ems's comments, I don't understand your question. :cross:
Owing to my not agreeing with ems's comments, I don't understand your question.. :cross:
Though agreeing with ems's comments, I feel she missed one important point. :tick:
Before going, I'd just like to say ... :tick:

In case you hadn't noticed, I have used different words in the :cross: sentences from those I used in the :tick: sentences.

I have been really confused about them.
The BBC site thinks your construction is OK
Bob K thinks it's not wrong.
ems thinks it's not natural.
soup and I crossed it as wrong.

This is clearly a construction over which native speakers disagree. Use it if you wish, but some native speakers won't like it.
