Let's pretend I have an expression I use: Schmitten. It doesn't matter what it means. I use it so often that when you think of me, you think of someone saying "Schmitten."
Someone says "What's Barb_D's favorite pet?" You say "A schmititen." Because it sounds like "kitten."
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
