Hello,

I'd like to know which is better in the following cleft sentence - that, when or no pronoun at all?

Remember that it is during the teenage years __________ children do most growing up physically and emotionally.

Thank you!

Either one works, but I prefer "that" and so do 5jj and emsr2d2 if I am not mistaken. Check out this thread.

IMO, it would be better if you just inserted the link, and let the OP judge by themselves. Other members might find your speaking on their behalf objectionable.

PS: I prefer "that" too.

In that particular sentence, I would use "that".

I did include a link and I did weaken my statement by saying "... if I am not mistaken". The point I was making, by referring to that thread, is that Verona_82's sentence and the one I enquired about - It was here that/when we met. - are the same in terms of grammar.

Thanks for the replies! Would omitting the pronoun make the sentence more informal?

It strikes me as plain wrong without either "that" or "when". Cleft sentences require "that", or, "which", "who", "where" or "when" instead of "that".

It was in San Francisco where the movie was shot. :tick:
It was in San Francisco that the movie was shot. :tick:
It was in San Francisco the movie was shot.:cross:

You might hear it without "that" in conversation, but not in written language.
